I was hoping I could play better and give you all something to look forward to watching on TV. This was a great experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I can't say it was easy. I started off very strong by winning the first stage but living out in Japan never felt at home. Although it was a rough trip, it is still incredibly difficult to throw in the towel. But back to reality, I must find a job and get back to work.

Total costs of this trip: Approx. $10,000. Yes....OUCH.

Anyway, I'll see you all back in the states. My last round only had 3 REEEAALLY bad holes. Otherwise I was 2-under. I'm exhausted, stressed out, and I sprained my ankle. It was a pretty wet, sideways rain, windy day with this typhoon coming in. I sliced my ball into the sherwood forest and unfortunately, I found it. Amazingly, I got the ball out but my clumsy butt didn't make it out as clean. Slipped on a muddy hillside and was saved by a tree. The ankle's tender and swollen but its nothing bad. Just a small sprain. I can't swing well enough with this ankle, I'm no where near contention to make the cut, and I've been told that the likelihood that tomorrow's round will be canceled because of the typhoon is 90%. So I decided to withdraw from the event.

It's a disappointing finish but I'm happy to be coming home. On a bright note, if I were to attempt this again, I'm allowed to start from Stage 2 next year.

Sunhill Country Club Pictures

here's some pictures for you all of my next venue, Sunhills Country Club and Resort

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Layout is much tighter than the first stage venue at 58 Golf Course but its definitely shorter. Shorter is a HUGE advantage for me. Tee shots are critical but the approach shots are not too difficult. Most every shot has OB left and most approaches go downhill. Greens are fairly flat and are identical to Victoria Golf Course in Carson. Rough is light and not an issue.

Shot 2-under today in a bogey free round. On a very bright note, I`ve played a total of 12 rounds since I`ve been in Japan and I`ve consistently shot under par. If this keeps up, I should pass 2nd Stage with no problems. I`m going into the event with only the sight of winning and if I keep that mentality, making the 20% field cut line should be a given. My game plan is set...just need to follow and execute.

Tournament starts September 4 through September 7.

Tachikawa Golf Course

This is a golf range I went to. They are all programmed to follow the cartpaths. That's why in some of the pictures, you see tire tracks in the course. Its kind of like Disneyland's go carts. It follows a magnetized metal beam implanted in the ground that a sensor in the cart follows. You carry around a remote and the cart moves when you want it to.

Pictures from 58 Golf Course, Japan

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It may be a 3 foot put to seal the deal for $5 or $5000. Whatever it is that makes you nervous before a shot, you're suddenly burdened by uncontrollable anxiety and jitters. Your heart starts pounding and all you can think about is, "don't mess up!" Its incredibly stressful. The answer to dealing with the nerves is easier than you think. Some may have an easier time learning this than others, but if a nervous wreck like myself can handle pressure packed situations with a smile and steady hands, you may want to try what I'm about to share.

Before my trip out to Japan, I played in the Long Beach Open and I was nervous. There really was no reason for it, but I didn't want to play bad. I was doing great in practice but once I set foot in the tournament, my heart started pounding, my body was twitching, I was hyperventilating and I couldn't control my swing. This wasn't the way I wanted to prepare for my trip to Japan. Then for the second round, I found my old self. But it took some practice in...BREATHING.

Yes, BREATHING. The way you breath can affect the chemical balance of your body. When you become nervous, many things happen in your mind that cause problems in your blood/oxygen as well as the chemicals being mixed around.

First off, when you begin to have fear, you get nervous and your body begins to adapt by preparing to fight. Adrenaline gets pumped through your blood stream and your heart begins to race. Now you're twitching and shaking like you just took 10 shots of espresso. You get so nervous in fact, that you may even begin to hyperventilate and your mouth gets dry. Feel tense with butterflies in your stomach too? You start taking deep breaths but its not helping.

Well, its the way you're breathing that's causing the problems. When you start to feel that adrenaline swell in your heart, you need to immediately slow the flow of blood to supply the adrenaline to the body and slow the heart rate down. This will keep you calm and collected.

Here's how...if you have a panic attack, take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds...then let it out very slowly. Here's the key, don't breath out too fast or shallow. Take a normal deep breath in, but exhale very SLOWLY (preferably longer than your inhale) and exhale FULLY. I say fully because you don't want excess oxygen in your system or else the mixture of blood/oxygen will not be stable. You need to fully release oxygen to fully replenish it back into the system. See if you can do this and FEEL your heartbeat slow down. Do it a couple times to see if you feel it slow down. You may even feel a heartbeat skip when you're doing this...its perfectly natural...you won't die. Now once you have your heartbeat somewhat normal, concentrate on controlling your breaths. Preferably about 2 seconds in and 2 seconds out. You want to regulate your breaths because you never notice how imbalanced your breathing becomes when you're nervous...its the last thing you think about.

Hyperventilating? Just means you're taking waaaaaay too many breaths in and not exhaling enough. Your blood stream is filled with oxygen and you feel like you can't catch your breath. Usually people use a paper bag but on the course, you can just cup your hands. Basically, you want to take a deep breath in and let it out fully into your hands and start breathing in the carbon dioxide from your exhales. Eventually, you may feel a bit light headed and overly relaxed. Move your hands and start breathing normally and the blood/oxygen levels will regulate by themselves. Still, remember to control your breaths.

The more you can do these exercises, you can regulate how your heart beats and decrease the flow of adrenaline filled blood as well as decreasing the release of adrenaline at all. When your body is chemically balanced (like when you're not nervous in practice), you'll be able to control your body and the swing much better.

If this doesn't work, pick up another sport or stay away from stressing things all together.

Stage 1 Scores

Stage 1 - Japan Tour Qualifying
Five Eight Golf Course - Yaita, Japan
Par 72
6959 Yards
Rating 72

Full Leaderboard (assuming you can read japanese...but my name's in english)
http://www.jgto.org/jgto_web/qualifying/07_1st_04.html

Round 1: -3 (69) [t-4th] Leader at -5
Round 2: -4 (68) [t-1st] Leaders at -7
Round 3: -3 (69) [1st]
Total: -10 (206)
Cut: +4

Haha, I won by one shot. if you can do this by minimizing body motion but optimizing clubhead speeds, you'll start hitting straighter and farther while expending less energy. plus, you can maintain your energy level the whole round rather than tiring out by the 14th hole.

Scores are coming around...so is the LBO

My scores are finally dropping to competitive numbers. I'm consistent and confident in my game. Although most of my practice rounds are played at Victoria Golf Course, shooting low scores anywhere is always a plus. My last 5 rounds at Vic have been 71, 69, 68, 68, 65. My index has dropped to -3.1. If I can keep this pace through my qualifiers, I'll be looking forward to a 2008 season exemption on the JGTO.

I have posted my entry into the Long Beach Open for July 26-July 29. It looks as though I am 9th on the waiting list but my chances of entering are very good. They will be holding the event on both the El Dorado Golf Course and Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. Public viewing is allowed. I had a 2-shot cushion and lots of confidence up on the 10th tee box.

And then it happened...

I hit a wild push slice driver that went into the next fairway and stopped behind a tree. During that drive, mentally, I felt restricted. The restriction would then transfer into my body. I could feel my hands get weak and just as I entered into my impact zone, my body froze causing my shot to be blocked out to the right.

The bad mental image and swing should have been forgotten and I should have played how I did the first 9 holes. However, I found myself struggling to AVOID the bad swing. I was terrified that if such a swing happened again, I'd be in serious trouble especially if there was trouble on the right. And just the opposite, if I protected a push slice and duck hooked the ball, I'd have trouble on the left.

Now all of a sudden, the middle of the fairway was no longer in my mind. That smooth swing I had the first 9 holes was gone. All I could think about was, "don't push the ball, don't snap it left, don't mess up." Of course these are normal thoughts of any human and they are definitely things to avoid. But even though I told myself NOT to do these bad things, I never stopped thinking about them. I had completely eliminated all the positive thoughts that a player needs to hit the ball well.

I lost the tournament by 1 shot.

Flood your mind with things that you need to be doing...not what you don't want to do.

The very next week, I went back to the same course and played the round with a positive attitude and mentality. I never gave up, I never changed my swing thought routines and I never let myself dwell on my mistakes or fears.

Guess what, I won.

With anything in life, dwelling on your fears and feeding them with bad thoughts will turn it into a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. If you maintain all you know to be good and proper and become fully engrossed in what you need to be doing, you will forget that there is anything to fear at all. And forgetting you can fail will only allow you to maximize your chances of succeeding.

Schedule for Japan

Depart for Japan: August 2nd

1st stage: August 7, 8, 9
Location: Tochigi, Japan
Course: Five Eight Golf Course

2nd stage: September 3, 4, 5, 6
Location: TBA
Course: TBA

I will most likely be in Yokohama for about 22 days between 1st and 2nd stage.

Return for the US September 7 or 8.

3rd and 4th stage is set sometime in November.

New Long Drive!!!

June 16th. If I knew it would be this difficult to get a damn golf tour card...hehe, ya, I'd still do it. Dude, if Japanese procedures weren't complicated enough, there are no loopholes to use to my advantage to get my application pushed through. So here's what I've encountered so far:

Let me say first off, the JGTO does not submit 2007 applications until late April and it must be turned in by June 8th. The timeframe I have to obtain material from Japan and the items they request cut my deadline very close. Bastards.

1. To apply for the JGTO (Japan Golf Tour Org), you must fill out an "ORIGINAL" application from the JGTO headquarters. So basically, I can't have the bastards fax me a copy nor can I download it from the net. They purposely don't have it on the net for that very reason. I received the application in the mail but I don't see the big deal.

2. Must show proof of a 3-handicap or better authorized by the USGA of America (for American players). I've never had to get my handicap because nothing on the US Tour requires it because there's other methods of proving your ability. I have a letter from my own golf instructor AND an official letter of my play on the Pepsi Tour. Still, no go. I had to get a USGA handicap established, which by the way, took me a month to get.

3. Must show proof of liability insurance. Not only do I need insurance that will be covered in Japan, but I have to freakin show proof. For some reason, our Homeowner's Insurance doesn't cover out of country property so I've had to apply for "renter's insurance."

4. A payment receipt for the entry fee must be attached to the application upon submittal to show proof of payment into the organization's personal banking account. Here's the tricky part. To wire money internationally, there's a wire transfer fee. The JGTO doesn't know that amount but their bank does. When you fill out the application, you also need their address which isn't listed on the application. So not only do you have to overpay to compensate the fee, you need to call Japan (international rate phone bill) to get their damn address and routing number. PAIN IN THE @$$.

5. Your chosen location of play is not guaranteed. So basically, if I chose to play in Chiba, Japan and it got filled up so I was transferred, all AFTER purchasing plane and hotel tickets, you're screwed. Why can't I just plan those things after I receive confirmation? By the time I receive confirmation of my play location, plane tickets or hotel accommodations may not be available or at a reasonable price.

NOW...if I get past all the discrepancies, how does my play earn me a card?

1. There are 4 stages you must pass. You must pass each subsequent stage to continue to the next stage...so if I fail to pass the first stage, I may not continue to stage 2 and so on.

2. They take the top 20~25 players + ties to advance to the next stage out of a given field at each testing site. (Each stage has approx. 5 different testing sites to choose from.)

3. Research shows that any score under par has qualified past all 4 stages. Stage 1 has three rounds, stage 2 has four rounds, stage 3 has four rounds and stage 4 has six rounds. As long as my combined score in each stage is under par, my chances of receiving a card is very high.

4. In stage 4, the top 50 advance to the highest golf tour level in Japan. The top 150 will be allowed to play in "open" events as well as their "Challenge Tour" events (equivalent to the US Nationwide Tour).

The funny thing is, it would seem that passing the qualifier is MUCH easier to accomplish than properly filling out the application process. Headache.

Would you be interested in becoming my sponsor?

I am asking for support to help my travels and fees associated with qualifying for the Japan Golf Tour. With anything in life, you're faced with obstacles that test your character and the limits of your will. In the grand scheme, saying "I want to play golf for a living" is quite simple. But here's where it becomes difficult and it separates those who will from those who won't:

1. Money. I'm not a rich person. My family isn't all that wealthy. All four stages to attain a Japan Tour card will cost $7000. This does NOT include food, rooms, airfare, clothing, golf balls, practice rounds, caddy fees, liability and medical insurance, and transportation. Would you be willing to fork out close to $15000 of money to pursue a dream? It's tough when $15000 is, in my world, a LOT of money. Especially if passing doesn't necessarily mean you get any of it back.

2. Living situation. Oh the culture shock...living in smaller confined spaces of Japan will take getting used to, improving on my language skills, and just culturally having to learn their norms. The cost of living is much higher than the US. Take gas for example...you're complaining about $3.75 for gas now? Its about $5~$6 a gallon in Japan, not to mention you also have to pay for their toll roads. No "free"ways out there.

3. Friends/family. All you people close to me live in the US. Trust in character is extremely hard to find, especially from what I've been through. Imma be lonely man.

4. Weather/earthquakes. It's pits hot in the summer, damn cold in the winter, typhoons, hurricanes, frequent earthquakes. It's what you get when you have an island on the Ring of Fire.

5. Time. I'd basically be wasting time if I don't pass. Now some of you will say, "we'll its a great experience, and you'll get it out of your system knowing you tried." I could be using this time to get a job and start building more experience. I'm 29 now and I have very little to show for my life since graduating college. And besides, I've golfed competitively my whole life...since I was 7. The urge and drive to compete will never escape me no matter what I try. This isn't a urge satisfier. This is a serious, money-making, prove what I've got mission.

So why bother? It's just my time. No more holding it off. There are many who know me who think I have the talent to be great. Many of the same people also believe that I may have the talent within but it has yet to surface or that it may never surface. Some just flat out think I don't have what it takes.

But my decision is simple. I'm going because I know I can make it. If I don't, I'll be sorely disappointed. What more can I say? Believe what you want. I don't have a second chance...I don't have money to do this just for fun. I'm going with the confidence and desire to make their tour and make a lot of money...period.

Welcome to my blogspot!

Hello everyone. Thank you for visiting my blog spot. I created this post to allow myself to reflect, advertise, give thanks, vent, keep in touch and update my on-goings in regards to playing golf in Japan.

It has been a difficult decision and even more difficult task to pursue a career in golf. I've had many countless days and nights contemplating whether I have the ability to even make it on any tour. I will be turning 29 this May and aside from graduating college and being somewhat of an entrepreneur, I have nothing to show for my time spent thus far.

I hope that though this blog, I will share and possibly pull support from all those who find my pursuit interesting and even inspiring. I will be fighting for my place in this world, to live my life doing what I know best...golf.

I want to thank all of my friends and family who have and will continue to endure my struggles and success. I'll hold close to my heart the love and encouragement and hope to share with all of you, my dream of a life on the tour.
